Indoor mold growth, commonly called mildew, subsists primarily on house dust which contains biodegradable nutrients like lint, pet dander and human skin scales. Believe it or not, a person sheds approximately 40,000 to 50,000 skin scales a day, so that's a lot of food for mold.
Even with such a bountiful food source, mold still needs moisture to grow. In a basement, this moisture can be provided by water seeping through the foundation, or by water from an overflowing washing machine, a leaking pipe, or a dripping boiler or hot-water heater.
Where Does Mold Grow in a Basement?
If a house with a finished basement has ever had leaks or flooding, there may be mold growth behind the walls or under the raised floor. Mold growth in basement carpets (and pads) that have not been replaced after flooding is virtually certain. Mold will also grow in dust in carpeting and on furniture surfaces when the relative humidity has not been adequately controlled.
